CHICAGO, USA: The American Association of Endodontists (AAE) has revised its endodontic treatment options guide for difficult clinical situations. The new, full-color guide includes 13 new cases and over 100 images that demonstrate successful treatment, and encourages dentists to assess all possible endodontic treatment options before recommending extraction of a comprised tooth.
According to the association, the guide is a critical resource for clinical practitioners who want to save their patients' natural teeth. By providing numerous examples with radiographs and clinical photographs, clinical considerations and guidance for successful outcomes based on prognosis, the guide helps dentists make treatment decisions in challenging clinical situations.
In addition, the guide is aimed at encouraging increasing collaboration between general dentists and endodontic specialists to develop treatment plans that could save the natural tooth.
The American Academy of Periodontology, American College of Prosthodontics and AAE held a joint symposium focused on the importance of preserving natural dentition from July 19 to 20. At the event, participants discussed advanced treatments and evidence-based best practice for preserving natural teeth.
"Helping patients maintain and keep their teeth and ensuring supporting structures are healthy, beautiful and functioning are fundamental goals for every practicing dentist," said Dr. Lily T. Garcia, chair of the American College of Prosthodontics Education Foundation.
The free document, titled "Treatment Options for the Comprised Tooth: A Decision Guide," is available for download from the AAE website at www.aae.org/treatmentoptions. The document is aimed at the entire dental community, including general dentists and dental students.
