ISTANBUL, Turkey: The DT Study Club Symposium, which is traditionally held in the scope of the FDI Annual World Dental Congress, was always well attended during the last week. Well-known speakers from seven countries lectured on cosmetic dentistry, orthodontics and other related subjects. For example, Dr Gianfranco Berrutti, President of the Italian Dental Industries Association (UNIDI), spoke about the role of the Italian dental industry worldwide and the upcoming International Expodental, Italy’s most important showcase event and dental trade exhibition.

In his presentation, Berrutti said that PROMUNIDI, the company owned by UNIDI that organises the show, is already looking at foreign markets as an important target for dental industry shows. He disclosed that more than 300 companies will be exhibiting from 17 to 19 October in Milan. In addition, visitors from more than 80 countries are expected to attend the event.

According to Berrutti, the Italian dental industry is third worldwide in terms of turnover, only surpassed by the US and Germany. He also stated that the Italian dental industry currently employs more than 3,000 people and has an annual revenue of more than €700 million. More than 30 per cent of overall production accounts for dental equipment for practitioners (€182 million) and about 20 per cent for consumables for dentists (€141 million). “Except for the years 2008 and 2009, which were marked by the economic crisis, the industry has seen a constant increase over the last decade,” Berrutti said. “The same trend is visible in exports of dental products. We are seeing products made in Italy, which are characterised by their high-tech performance, quality and unique design, increasingly being distributed abroad.”

Alongside Berrutti, Dr Adel El Lababidi (Czech Republic), Dr Kosmas Tolidis (Greece), Sabine Nahme (US), Dr Armin Nedjat (Germany), Dr Andrey Akulovich (Russia), Dr Maria Gabriella Grusovin (Italy), Dr Didem Atabek (Turkey) and Dr Derek Mahony (US) held continuing education lectures during the symposium.

With the sponsorship of dental manufacturers ShofuKerrCOLTENEChampions-Implants andR.O.C.S., the experts discussed the latest concepts and technologies in dentistry. PROMUNIDI, the International Cone Beam Institute and CROIXTURE, a new German fashion label for medical professionals, also helped make this year’s symposium a great success.
