UTRECHT, Netherlands: Dutch dentists have launched a dental app for Apple mobile devices that patients can consult for advice when their dentist is not available. The functionality of the app is based on questions about and possible solutions for common dental problems to help the user obtain first-aid instructions.

Toothache Pro is a dental application intended to offer professional advice for more than 60 frequent dental problems. It was developed for the iPhone and iPad and has been released in Dutch, English and German.

“Working as a dentist myself, I developed the app with a group of colleagues to offer our patients an extra service outside consultation hours. It can be a useful supplement to the clinical inspection by a dentist,” said Dr Dennis Webhofer, initiator of the app.

The app assists patients when they need more information on toothaches and dental treatments when their dentist is not available during weekends or holidays. It consists of four categories and contains more than 60 questions and answers about tooth or gum problems in adults and children, such as “Has a piece of your tooth chipped off?” and “Did you have a root canal but are you still in pain?”. The app delivers useful information and illustrations according to the answers provided.

According to Webhofer, interest in the app and its corresponding website had been high since its introduction. The Dutch version has been a great success in the Netherlands and many Dutch dentists have added the app logo to their websites.

“The app has an average of ten downloads a day, reaching all the way to India, South Africa, Germany and America,” said Webhofer.

The app is available on iTunes for €0.79 (US$0.99). A large percentage of the app revenue is donated to the Dutch Red Cross, since the developers are members of Junior Chamber International, a non-profit organisation of 200,000 young people in more than 100 countries around the world.
