The annual World Congress of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists (ICOI) offers an outstanding clinical and educational experience for professionals in implant dentistry. In anticipation of the ICOI World Congress in Berlin, which will be held from 15 to 17 October, Dental Tribune Online had the opportunity to speak with Dr Konstantinos Valavanis, who is a member of the congress programme committee.
Dental Tribune Online: Dr Valavanis, could you please introduce yourself to our readers by telling them how you became involved with the ICOI?
Dr Konstantinos Valavanis: Well, my journey with the ICOI began after I helped found the German Association of Oral Implantology (DGOI), which then became an affiliate society of the ICOI in 2004. Since then I have been supporting the ICOI, becoming an international ambassador and president of the ICOI in Greece. I am currently serving as a member of the board of directors and it goes without saying that I am very proud to be part of the largest implantology organisation worldwide.
The ICOI is one of the world’s largest providers of continuing dental implant education, with the main objective to provide dental professionals with high-quality education to better serve their patients. How important is the World Congress in achieving this overall aim?
The aim of the World Congress is to bring together a variety of dental professionals from around the globe in order to exchange different opinions and create a fruitful dialogue, resulting in the further progress of our profession.
Attendees of this year’s congress can look forward to an exceptional line-up of distinguished dentists from all over the world, who will be sharing their valuable knowledge, new ideas and techniques. Then, of course, there is the presence of major dental companies exhibiting their newest innovations and products.
What aspects will be covered by the Young Implantologists programme in particular?
It is the first time that the Young Implantologists programme is on offer at a World Congress, and we can definitely look forward to hearing and learning from these younger, talented professionals. In particular, they will be presenting all the newest aspects of implant dentistry, including digital planning, computer-guided surgery, CAD/CAM restorations and the latest augmentation biomaterials.
What do you consider the most important developments in dental implantology today, and how has the ICOI responded to these trends?
Today, I am sure, all dentists are aware that the science of dentistry is going through a dramatic transition because of the digital revolution. The ICOI follows closely and supports all these trends, but also always respects the fundamental knowledge of implant dentistry.
