Istrodent: Leading the way in South Africa and Africa with their mobile clinics

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa: A leading local dental equipment and dental consumable supplier, Istrodent, are taking the lead in both South Africa and Africa with their design, manufacturing and outfitting of mobile dental and mobile health clinics. These clinics are used throughout the region to bring critically needed health care to rural residents where even simple health care is difficult to get.

Istrodent was founded in South Africa in 1989 and over the years has grown from strength to strength in the dental market in South Africa, importing and supplying a wide range of dental products. However, few people within the dental profession in South Africa know that Istrodent is also a leading supplier of mobile dental and mobile health clinics.

Since 1976, Istrodent’s director has been involved in the development, design and building of such mobile clinics. As such, the company is able to build a wide variety of mobile clinics onto basically any type of vehicle, whether it is a 4x4, a truck, a minibus, trailer or even train; they can do it. In addition, the clinics are not limited either and to date they have built a number of clinics from dental to ear and eye, surgical and circumcision as well as mammograms and TB station clinics. Their clients range from private to South African government departments and corporate entities such as Aquafresh and Samsung, sending the clinics all over South Africa and Africa.

A dental clinic is outfitted with the latest equipment and is in effect a fully functioning dental practice with a dental chair, dental light, x-ray unit and developer, autoclave and everything else needed to provide a patient with the necessary dental care. Power to the equipment is primarily from a generator and a mains supply to a local electricity source. However, with the advent of solar panel technology, new mobile clinics are fitted with solar panels to provide power to the unit. As the technology becomes more advanced, a mobile clinic’s equipment could be entirely solar powered. In addition, the units come equipped with a water tank for fresh water as well as air conditioning, outside TVs to play educational videos and awnings to provide shade to waiting patients.

Istrodent is continuously improving their designs and are even able to produce mobile health clinics whereby there is a number of clinics on one mobile unit. For instance, the new Samsung Solar Powered Health Clinic has an eye and a blood test clinic, a dental clinic and an ear clinic, all in one. There are currently three Samsung Health Centers with one even going to Ethiopia to provide health care.

A full article on Istrodent’s mobile clinics will be published in the October edition of Dental Tribune South Africa. For more information please visit Istrodent’s website: www.istrodentshop.com.
