WELS, Austria: An oral and maxillofacial surgeon from Austria is alleged to have given substandard treatment to desperate patients he duped with cheap offers over a period of eight years. The local public health department, relevant medical association and public prosecutor are investigating the matter that was made public by the surgeon’s ex-partner.
As reported by the Austrian website www.oe24.at, the man had practised in various areas of the country and had already been sued twice for botched treatment. Details, however, were not disclosed.
The number of patients treated by the surgeon since 2006 and the number who did not receive proper treatment are not yet known. According to prosecutors, to date, only one victim has been identified. The dentist did not keep any records, according to a regional medical insurance provider.
The alleged malpractice was revealed when the surgeon’s ex-partner contacted the authorities. Despite her lack of medical knowledge, she had repeatedly assisted during surgery in his office. Sanitary conditions during those procedures were poor, the health department stated.
The relevant dental association has filed a complaint. “We are talking about possible assault charges,” the prosecutor said.
