SURREY – The Oral-B toothbrush brand has announced that its SmartSeries electric toothbrush is now available for purchase in the UK. The device is the first toothbrush to use Bluetooth 4.0 technology to connect to a smartphone application. Its interactivity is aimed at establishing personalised oral care routines and increasing collaboration between patients and dental professionals.

According to Oral-B, the SmartSeries 6000 with Bluetooth connectivity is now available at Boots pharmacies for the recommended retail price of £229. It can also be ordered online via the UK Amazon store. The company further announced that sales in other parts of Western Europe and North America will begin in autumn this year. Distribution in the rest of the world is scheduled for next year.

The new toothbrush, which is compatible with six different Oral-B brush heads, offers a number of interactive features. After downloading the respective Oral-B app, the user can connect the toothbrush to his or her smartphone to customise brush settings, for example, including session length and modes.

In addition, the app is intended to encourage communication between patients and dental professionals. Dentists can review and programme brushing routines in the app for their patients to help them improve behaviours and focus on problem zones in the mouth. The app also features a number of oral health tips.

Pretests have shown that brushing time increased significantly when patients used the app. Users of the electric toothbrush brushed for 2 minutes and 16 seconds, while users of manual toothbrushes only did so for about 60 seconds.

The smartphone app is already available free on iOS in the UK and the US, and will become available for Android users in August. It will be offered in Western Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand from July, August and September, respectively, and in the rest of the world in 2015
