A Healthier Smile – A Healthier You

Prophylaxis (Cleanings)

The objective of a prophylaxis is to prevent/arrest disease, preserve function and to maintain a healthy state of your teeth and gums. Treatment by a dental hygienist is required to remove calculus (tarter) deposits from above and below your gum line to ensure optimal health.

Dental cleanings should be done every six months unless you are diagnosed with periodontal disease.

If you have been diagnosed with periodontal disease, you will need a series of appointments to debride your mouth of calculus, bacteria and disease. Deep scaling and soft tissue curettage usually slows or stops periodontal disease from progressing. Routine oral hygiene scaling, polishing, and examination are increased to once every two to four months depending on the severity of the disease.

Your dentist and hygienist will discuss the health of your mouth at your prophylaxis visit and examination. They will inform you if you have periodontal disease and instruct you on how to improve your oral hygiene habits and diet, as well as, determine what type of cleaning or periodontal maintenance schedule is best for you.
