Root canal treatment (root canal therapy or endodontics) is necessary when a tooth is infected or abscessed at the tip of the root. This infection is started in a variety of ways such as:

• The tooth is cracked
• The tooth has experienced some form of trauma
• The tooth has large/deep decay
• The tooth has a pre-existing deep filling

Once the pulp of the tooth becomes infected a root canal is necessary to treat the infection at the tip of the root.

A root canal is performed to clean out the infected pulp chamber of the tooth and the canals are disinfected. Once the infection is resolved, the canals are filled to prevent any further infection and a crown is recommended as the final restoration.
