BRUSSELS, Belgium: The Platform for Better Oral Health in Europe is hosting its second European Oral Health Summit in the European Parliament in Brussels on 13 October. The event aims to discuss new ways to improve oral health in Europe by presenting examples of best practices in oral health promotion and preventative measures from across the EU.
The platform was initiated in 2010 as a response to the Call to Action for Better Oral Health in Europe that was handed over to former European Health Commissioner John Dalli by several members of the European Parliament. The mission of the platform is to promote oral health and the cost-effective prevention of oral diseases in Europe. Moreover, it aims to foster a common European approach towards education, prevention and access to better oral health in the EU.
Therefore, the platform has been collecting examples of best practices in order to help determine joint solutions to improving oral health and, ultimately, general health and overall quality of life in Europe. In this way, the platform hopes to reduce inequalities both across Europe and within the EU member states and to foster an understanding of the importance of oral health among EU policymakers.
The compiled results will be presented at the European Parliament on 13 October by various speakers, including Dr Paula Vassallo, Chair of the Platform for Better Oral Health in Europe, and Dr Vytenis Andriukaitis, European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety.
The first European Oral Health Summit was held on 5 September 2012 and was attended by more than 140 decision makers and experts from across Europe.
