Swiss manufacturer introduces coal sonic toothbrush

TEUFEN, Switzerland: After the success of its innovative manual whitening toothbrush, Swiss dental manufacturer megasmile has developed the world’s first sonic toothbrush with integrated carbon particles, which have an abrasive effect. In contrast to abrasives in toothpaste, however, they are very soft and polish the teeth without any enamel or dentinal wear, a significant concern for people with irritated gingivae, like periodontitis and orthodontic patients.

According to dentist and megasmile founder Dr Roland Zettel, the whitening effect works like a rubber: during brushing, microparticles are released from the bristles that help remove stains and biofilm from the teeth. The brush head of the new Sonic Black Whitening polishes the teeth at a rate of up to 45,000 strokes per minute and thus intensifies the whitening effect.

The new toothbrush also features a brushing and tooth quadrant timer. Furthermore, users can choose between three cleaning modes.

Since September, the Sonic Black Whitening has been available for purchase from megasmile’s online shop, specialised dental care online shops, and retail pharmacies at the recommended retail price of CHF110 (€90).

In 2013, the company’s Black Whitening manual toothbrush received the GOOD DESIGN award. The award annually recognises new consumer products from Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas for their outstanding designs. It is one of the oldest and most important industrial design prizes worldwide.
