Webinar evaluates dual-wavelength approach to treating and placing implants
by Dental Tribune International

LEIPZIG, Germany: The general advantages of laser surgery, such as decreased bleeding, a dry surgical field, reduced postoperative pain and reduced edema, have led to significant interest in the application of laser in bone cutting and soft-tissue procedures in a minimally invasive surgical approach. In a webinar presented by the Dental Tribune Study Club on Nov. 29, an expert will evaluate a new procedure that allows immediate impression taking, better healing and earlier loading in implant treatment.

Hard-tissue surgical procedures, such as bone block harvesting, implant bed osteotomy, sinus lift with a crestal or lateral approach, immediate post-extraction implant placement, and implant recovery, are far less invasive with modern techniques. In most cases, these complex surgical procedures can be completed with no flaps or sutures, and less or no use of the drill and rotary instruments.

This course presents a new procedure that uses laser rather than rotary instruments and will demonstrate how the use of two laser wavelengths, Er,Cr:YSGG laser and diode laser, offers a minimally invasive approach to these procedures and achieves better postoperative success more quickly. The dual-wavelength approach allows immediate impression taking, better healing and earlier loading.

Comparisons with conventional surgical tools, such as piezoelectric instruments, have shown that a better postoperative outcome is achieved with this approach more quickly. In soft tissue, incision, excision, implant recovery, and other surgical treatments can be performed without anesthetic or sutures, with excellent 3-D control. Incorporating a second wavelength with deep absorption characteristics by the tissue, the overall procedure better addresses infection in immediate post-extraction sites.

Webinar participants will gain a greater understanding of minimally invasive approaches to the placement of dental implants and of the fundamentals of using lasers in oral implantology to achieve better postoperative success more quickly, as well as learn how to compare and contrast treatment options for treating and placing implants. The presenter, Professor Gilles Chaumanet, who holds multiple mastership-level accreditations in laser, periodontology, implant therapy, oral surgery, radiology and anatomy, will explain which laser wavelengths are safe to use around the ailing or failing implant, including biomaterials and surface coatings.

The one-hour webinar, titled "Lasers in Oral Implantology — An Evaluation of a Dual Wavelength Approach to Treating and Placing Implants," will be broadcast live online on Nov. 29 from 7 p.m. Participants will be able to ask questions via a chat window and have the opportunity to earn a continuing education credit by completing a multiple-choice questionnaire on the topic discussed.

Registration for the webinar is now open on the DT Study Club website, www.dtstudyclub.com.
