Webinar: Expert explains recent concepts for bulk filling of posterior cavities
by Dental Tribune International

LEIPZIG, Germany: In a webinar presented by the Dental Tribune Study Club on 16 October, Prof. Joseph Sabbagh will give an overview of new bulk-filling systems. Sabbagh, who holds a PhD in biomaterials and a master’s degree in operative dentistry, will use well-documented clinical cases to outline the important steps to achieving successful posterior restorations using this new technology.

Filling posterior cavities using resin composites is a challenging task for dentists looking for a fast and reliable technique. Resin composites used in posterior teeth must fulfil a number of requirements, such as good mechanical properties (high percentage of fillers), low shrinkage and a good degree of conversion. The handling of the composite, its ease of placement and the delivery system of the material to the cavity are of paramount importance. The stickiness of the composite on the instrument and the inclusion of air bubbles are also important concerns when placing the first composite layer in the bottom of the cavity.

Today, new bulk-filling systems from various companies are available, relying on a variety of technologies, such as flowable resin composite, sonic energy and fibre-based resin composite. These systems allow optimal composite packing in one or two layers, good adaptation to cavity walls and adequate time for material sculpting.

Sabbagh is currently Associate Professor in the Department of Conservative and Aesthetic Dentistry of the Lebanese University, director of the postgraduate programme and a member of the scientific committee. He is also a research fellow at the Center for Research and Engineering on Biomaterials at the Université catholique de Louvain in Belgium. He runs specialist private practices in cosmetic dentistry and endodontics in Beirut in Lebanon and in Brussels in Belgium. He has published many papers in dentistry, and has lectured locally and internationally in many countries.

The one-hour webinar, titled “Recent concepts for bulk filling of posterior cavities”, will be broadcast online on Wednesday, 16 October, from 9 a.m. EST. Participants will be able to ask questions via a chat window and have the opportunity to earn a continuing education credit by completing a multiple-choice questionnaire on the topic discussed.

Registration for the webinar is now open on the DT Study Club website, www.dtstudyclub.com.
